جشن مهرگان يكى از كهن ترين جشن ها و گردهمايى هاى هند و ايرانى است كه در ستايش و نيايش ايزد بزرگ و كهن هندو ايرانى به نام مهر يا ميترا (در اوستا و پارسى باستان «ميثره»، در سانسكريت «ميتره»)، ايزد نام آور روشنايى، پيمان، دوستى و محبت و خداى بزرگ دين مهرى (و ميترائيسم بعدى) برگزار مى شود.
به گمان نگارنده، سرچشمه باور به «مهر» و «گردونه مهر» در ميان هندوايرانيان باستان و سرايندگان مهريشت اوستا و ريگ وداى هندوان عبارت بوده است از ستاره قطبى و دو صورت فلكى پيراقطبى «خرس بزرگ» و «خرس كوچك» (دب اكبر و دب اصغر). مى دانيم كه قطب آسمانى در هر ۲۵۸۰۰ سال يك بار بر دور قطب دايره البروج مى گردد و امروزه در كنار ستاره «جُدَى» (جَدى) قرار دارد. اما در حدود ۴۸۰۰ سال پيش قطب آسمانى در نزديكى ستاره «ذيخ» از صورت فلكى «ثعبان» (اژدها / تنين) بوده است، اين ستاره با نام صورت فلكى خود نيز خوانده مى شود.
در آن زمان ستاره «ذيخ / توبان» قطب آسمانى زمين بوده است و مانند ستاره قطبى امروزى در جاى خود ثابت و بى حركت بوده و در همه شب هاى سال ديده مى شده و هيچ گاه طلوع و غروب نمى كرده است، اين ستاره در ميانه دو صورت فلكى پيراقطبى «خرس بزرگ» و «خرس كوچك» واقع شده است و اين دو صورت فلكى در هر شبانه روز يك بار به دور آن مى گرديده اند. اين گردش، همراه با گردش صورت فلكى «ثعبان»، نگاره باستانى «چليپا» يا «صليب شكسته» را در آسمان رسم مى كردند كه همان «گردونه مهر» است. در مهريشت، عبارت هاى «در فرازناى آسمان ايستاده» و «به خواب نرونده» اشاره آشكارى به ستاره قطبى است كه هميشه در يك جا ايستاده و هيچ گاه غروب نمى كند:
